"As consumers we are always looking for that next big thing. Something that you could run and tell your friends about as soon as you find out about it. Well it's about that time people. Having successfully used such e-outlets as imeem and YouTube, Fresh Jacobs has already established a solid reputation as one to watch out for. Personally, I was put on to Fresh through the his recent XXL feature (Yes, I said XXL. Dude is major. Shouts to Eskay and Jackpot) And do I even have to tell you were he's from? BX all day. Check out his latest effort, "The Cooley High Sessions" here, @ HOODPOINTOFVIEW.COM - Don't let me say I told you so...."
Hoodpointofview.com: Fresh Waz Good?!?!?...For the fans out there who don't know, explain who is Fresh Jacobs? Fresh Jacobs: Fresh Jacobs is a Hip Hop artist, a son of Hip Hop, a student of the game, a father, a visionary, as well as a kick connoisseur. Hoodpointofview.com: You were recently featured on XXLmag.com and a lot of people where showing you a lot of love and really appreciated that "fresh" prospective that you provide. How has that feature and that out pour of support affected you? Fresh Jacobs: The XXL Mag.com feature was a great look! The comments were actually beautiful in the fact that there wasn't any hating going as is the norm on music sites. It showed me what I long concluded; that people want GOOD music and if they're given it, they respond accordingly. I Love it! Hoodpointofview.com: Now you just dropped your latest mixtape "The Cooley High Sessions," but a lot of young'ns out there don't even know what Cooley High is. What made you want to name it that? Fresh Jacobs: It was actually a concept that came about in some family discussion. I admire how in that era black people were individuals in everything they did. If you watch "Cooley High" it was about a high school but in their daily activities of just being fly and enjoying life and attempting to find themselves, they were still individuals. "Cochese" could never be "Preach" and vice versa. I'm a little of both. Applying that concept to the music business I felt in Hip Hop everyone was carbon copies. You're either a "psuedo thug" or you're a lame ass "Hipster". I'm neither. I happen to be a Hip Hop artist, who needed to take these rappers back to school, hence "Cooley High", and teach them to be themselves as individuals and to teach fans to raise the level of expectations. Hoodpointofview.com In the tape you are experimenting with a lot of different sounds and your versatility really stands out.... Fresh Jacobs: I'm actually glad you picked up on the different sounds that I demonstrated my versatility on. If you look at BET, MTV or any of the playlists from TV to Radio it's all the same, a lack of creativity and versatility. My favorite right now is a tie. "Can I Kick It?" allowed me to get busy on a James Brown track and break all convential rules as well as have fun! My other favorite would have to be my verse on "Barry Bonds". In one verse I explained how I feel about the "Industry", my minimal successes, and how I view myself as opposed to these other rappers. Plus I feel like I got really busy on this verse! Wordplay, punchlines, the subliminals and the double entendres it's all there! That track is Hip Hop... Hoodpointofview.com: Do you think after this tape, fans have a clear picture of who Fresh Jacobs is as an artist? Fresh Jacobs: I think after this tape if fans don't have a clear picture who Fresh Jacobs is as an artist then they haven't listened! Seriously, I left it all on the table so to speak. I showed exactly who I am and unlike 95% of these rappers, It's all truth. I haven't said anything in rhyme that, I can't back up in person, and that's something I'm proud of. When your fans have a clear picture who you are they become supporters who not only like your music but they believe in you; and in an industry where fans come and go, I'd rather have supporters who are in my corner. Hoodpointofview.com: There has been a lot of Bronx artists that have been "carrying the flag" in an attempt to lead the charge in re-establishing credibility to hip hop in the BX. What (or who) do you think it'll take to get the BX where it once was? Fresh Jacobs: I love the fact that The Bronx is getting some love as far as people believing in talent but I'm not satisfied yet. The artists are getting busy and attempting to "carry the flag" but I feel they're not being taken seriously. They're conforming and not representing the birth place of Hip Hop correctly. I think to re establish credibility we need to get back to what Hip Hop is, beats, rhymes, and life. Stop blaming this region or that coast and make some good music. Simply. It's always been about quality and now Hip Hop is distorted in the fact that the most important factor is something that is nonexistent. It's all about "Swag"! Motherfucking Lil' Wayne don't even gotta rhyme cuz He got "Swag"? Isn't that what Hip Hop is about, the music? A person told me in order to be successful I need "an entourage and I need to talk shit on dvd". I laugh but I think that is a sad but true representation of what expectations are. No one is demanding more of their artists, so when artists such as myself take the charge, stop dumbing down and make better music, The Bronx will be back on top. Hoodpointofview.com: How to you expect this momentum going? What can people expect outta Fresh in the future? Fresh Jacobs: We just gonna continue to kill 'em with great music. My label, GFC/Live4Ever Ent. has always been about great music so as you can see, we just gonna do what we do! People can expect what they've been shown, great concepts, exceptional lyrics, and all around stellar music. I'm not a rapper, I'm a Hip Hop artist... I don't Rap, I do Music.... Hoodpointofview.com: Anything you wanna say real quick? Fresh Jacobs: I just wanna say If you don't have "The Cooley High Sessions" by now, then do yourself a service and download it now!
